A still GIF becomes one JPG. An animated GIF shows its frames in a strip with their start times: pick the one you want, or write every frame — each fully composited — as its own JPG.
Frames, composited
An animated GIF is a sequence of patches: each frame may redraw only the part that changed, and says what to do with it afterwards (leave it, clear it, or restore what was there before). Frames are decoded with the browser's WebCodecs frame decoder where it exists and with this site's own GIF reader where it does not; either way the picture you get for a frame is the whole picture at that moment.
Writing several frames turns one row into many, one per frame, named name-f001.jpg onwards, and they download together as a ZIP.
Step by step
- Drop a GIF. Animated ones show their frames in a strip above the queue.
- Tap a frame to convert it, or press Write every frame (or every Nth, or a range).
- Choose the background colour for any transparent pixels.
- Press Download: one JPG, or a ZIP of all the frames.
Colours and size
A GIF holds at most 256 colours per frame, so a JPG of it is usually larger in bytes for flat graphics and smaller for photographic GIFs. For logos and screenshots, the precise encoder's 4:4:4 subsampling (in Quality) keeps coloured edges crisp.
